FREE festival in Austin opposed to SXSW
For those of you who like live music, but don't have $800 to go to South by Southwest in Austin, check out the Texas Rockfest. It is a counter-festival that is also in Austin on the same weekend.

    It is apparently FREE.

I think I will go and check out The Atomic Outlaws. Saw them last summer at a different music festival and they were pretty good. Go check their music out on their myspace page.

The Watchmen movie is pretty much the book, like Sin City was the book. They streamlined the story a bit. I am glad they did that. The pirate story and all the bullshit going on at the newsstand would have made the movie longer without adding anything. The giant alien squid does not happen, but a much more internally consistent action happens instead. I won't spoil it by telling you what it is, because if you have read the book, it is the only thing that might surprise you.

    The casting was perfect.

I don't think it will be a blockbuster though. People expecting Spider-man or Batman will be confused.

    I HATE STEAM
For some reason, THQ decided to use Steam for the updater/installer for Dawn of War II.

I bought it at a retail store (Fry's).

I put the disc in to install and now I have to wait 22 hours while Steam sloooooowly pushes the install to my PC.

    LAME.

It probably will take longer to install than to play.

Probably can't play it offline (sorry, no laptop use when travelling, fyvm)

Why is there even a disc in the box? Just put a card with the activation code and a url in the box.

Steam sucks. It has always sucked. It broke my install of HalfLife Game of the Year edition (Steam updated it and it wouldn't finish).

What the hell is wrong with people that they can't behave at the inauguration? Singing "Na Na Na Na Hey Hey Hey Goodbye" when President Bush was introduced is just damned tacky, crude, and disrespectful of not only the man, but the office. Grow up. Show some class, dignity, and style. So you don't like President Bush, we get it. But you need to respect the man and the office he has held. You may not think you were safer after 9-11 because nothing happened on US soil, but President Obama's speech was strongly-worded saber-rattling, which would not have been said if the threat of terrorism was overstated in the Bush administration.

I've read a comment that someone wrote that "the job has gone from being the head hick, to the head of the free world." That's great, express yourself, but realize that you have given license for others to express themselves.

Bail Out Poor Business Practices? They Auto Say No.
Should congress bail out GM, Chrysler, and Ford? Not in my opinion.

Why? The United Auto Workers Union has crippled these companies ability to be solvent.

    How so? The Jobs Bank.

The what? A system that the United Auto Workers Union takes advantage of. A system that costs these companies $800 million a year. A system where employees are still paid with benefits for *NOT* working.

A few articles that explain it better than I can:

    http://mjperry.blogspot.com/2007/09/anti-jobs-bank-nice-nonwork-if-you-can.html

    http://www.detnews.com/2005/autosinsider/0510/17/A01-351179.htm

    http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/299798/uaw_and_automakers_to_bump_heads_over.html

All new automobile plants are in the sun belt, not the rust belt. It isn't because of the weather or anything like that. It is the unions and the unreasonable power they hold. Manufacturers would rather put the factories (and jobs) in states with right to work laws where the unions and their corruption have no hold.

Unions were important at one point. Paid vacation and sick time came from unions, as did safer work environments; but it also allows the worker to extort the management. When this exortion has a cost greater than the market can bear (i.e. absorb in the cost of the goods/services), the business will fail.

    Allow the market to operate.

How many modern auto plants could be built in a year in a non-union state for $800 million?

Mark Cuban questions Obama's selection for economic advisors...
Mark Cuban -- internet millionaire, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, and a huge Obama supporter -- has already started criticizing the president elect. I do not believe that his criticism is unfounded.

Read Mark Cuban's own blog entry concerning the economy.

Remember, remember the Fifth of November,
    The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
I can think of no reason
    Why the Gunpowder Treason
    Should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, t'was his intent
To blow up the King and Parli'ment.
    Three-score barrels of powder below
    To prove old England's overthrow;
By God's providence he was catch'd
With a dark lantern and burning match.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, let the bells ring.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, God save the King!

"The real threat to freedom in America has always been Puritanism; the notion that one function of government is to force people to lead virtuous lives attracts those on both the right (school prayer, anti-gay rights, abortion) and left (gun control, speech codes)." -anonymous
